The laser and optical system for the RIBF-PALIS experiment
2017
Abstract This paper describes the laser and optical system for the Parasitic radioactive isotope (RI) beam production by Laser Ion-Source (PALIS) in the RIKEN fragment separator facility. This system requires an optical path length of 70 m for transporting the laser beam from the laser light source to the place for resonance ionization. To accomplish this, we designed and implemented a simple optical system consisting of several mirrors equipped with compact stepping motor actuators, lenses, beam spot screens and network cameras. The system enables multi-step laser resonance ionization in the gas cell and gas jet via overlap with a diameter of a few millimeters, between the laser photons an…
Possibility of identifying the photon source studying the photon parameters
2004
Sometimes it is important to know the kind of laser and also the nature of the active media where the photons are produced, mainly when the photon source is situated at long distance from the target, and you can have information, only from the photons. The authors considered many ways of theoretical and applied research, using models for different types of lasers. High-speed and high-accuracy applications in processing trend to increase in the field of some important applications like laser beam welding and laser beam cutting. Some time the source presents inconstant parameters, and so, the measurements must be made in a relative short interval of time. The study requires problems like: spa…
Free-motion beam propagation factor measurement by means of a liquid crystal SLM
2011
We propose a compact and robust method to measure beam propagation factor (M2) of continuous wave (cw) laser beams. In contrast to the conventional scanning procedure described in the ISO/DIS 11146 standard, our proposal takes advantage of the features of programmable liquid crystal spatial light modulators (SLMs) where a lens is codified. Then, by using a CCD at a fixed position, the beam width according to the second order moment of the irradiance is determined for each focal length of the codified lenses. After adjusting the measured data to the theoretical focusing behavior of a real laser beam, the beam propagation factor is obtained. The proposed method was successfully validated in t…
Influence of laser beam profile on the generation of ultrasonic waves
2011
The different ultrasonic fields generated in metallic materials by a laser beam with flat and Gaussian profile are investigated experimentally and using the finite element method (FEM). A high power laser beam irradiating a solid surface produces elastic waves with a mechanics that depends on many parameters, including the profile of the laser beam. The influence of the beam profile is investigated with the FEM analysis, considering the temperature dependence of material properties.
Laser beam scattering effects in non-absorbent inhomogenous polymers
2007
Ilie, Mariana Kneip, Jean-Christophe Mattei, Simone Nichici, Alexandru Roze, Claude Girasole, Thierry; In this paper a numerical model for laser beam scattering in the semi-transparent polymers is presented, using a Monte Carlo algorithm and the Mie theory. The algorithm correctly accounts for the independent multiply-scattered light. We describe the algorithm, present a number of important parameters that account in the welding process, and explicitly show how the algorithm can be used to estimate the laser beam intensity both inside the semi-transparent component and at the welding interface and the beam widening. For the model validation an experimental bench test has been realized and s…
